Start with the roof, then compare coverings
Asphalt shingles, metal and low-slope membranes solve different roofing needs. The covering has to suit the slope and connect correctly at valleys, walls, edges and penetrations.
A material upgrade is considered with tear-off, decking, flashing and the rest of the assembly. A more expensive surface does not automatically resolve a failed detail underneath.

Roofing material choices
- Asphalt shingles
Architectural shingles offer a dimensional look on suitable pitched roofs. Shallow slopes require particular installation details, and shingles are not suitable below their manufacturer’s minimum slope.
- Metal roofing
Standing seam and exposed-fastener panels have different attachments, details and upkeep. Panel profiles and approved slope limits are product-specific.
- Low-slope membranes
TPO, EPDM and modified bitumen use continuous membranes and system-specific seam details. Drainage, insulation and deck condition remain part of the roof decision.
The transition can decide the detail
A porch or addition may have a shallower roof than the main house. The junction between a membrane and a shingle slope needs a planned water path rather than the same material forced across both.
The free inspection is a useful place to look at those connections and discuss which roof sections can share a system and which need a separate detail.
